Superbly sited and very private home of great sophistication, in a stunning walled garden setting with a separate cottage and about 13 acres.
This wonderful and sophisticated Grade II Listed country house is found in a very private setting, within an extensively walled garden, and enjoying views over its own lake. The Dower House sits in a raised position to make the best of the views, alongside The Bothy Cottage, which provides for guests or relations, or perhaps a letting investment.
As well as the formal gardens which lead down to the lake, there are two walled gardens and an extensive area of woodland and pasture beyond.
The house has been a much loved family home for many years, and has been carefully extended and improved in recent years. It now offers three elegant reception rooms, and a kitchen breakfast room along with 4 bedrooms and bathrooms in the main house. The Bothy Cottage has two more bedrooms and could be further extended into the former stables and music studio subject to any necessary consents.
The Dower House was built in 1952, by Eric Akers Douglas (4th Viscount Chilston). The Chilston Park Estate had been in his family for over 150 years and he chose to build the Dower House in the most beautiful part of the garden. While living here he enjoyed his collection of exotic birds (hence the Aviary), which he left to Leeds Castle upon his death. He had an extensive collection of antique books, which he kept in the cellar and he used some of these to create the secret door in the library. The garage was built to house his over-sized Bristol vintage car. He built the house to be a miniature version of the main Manor house and incorporated a number of features that instilled the grandeur that he was accustomed to including a dance floor, two beautiful antique hand-carved Limewood fireplaces, six 18th Century mahogany doors and various cornicings and crests.
The gardens are especially pleasing, with formal lawns, specimen trees, flower and shrub borders and wonderful vistas towards the lake which lies at their heart. There are two large walled gardens, and a variety of outbuildings and stables etc.
Beyond the lake is the woodland (where the spring that supplies water rises and is piped to the house, thence being filtered and pumped to provide high pressure showers. A modern wood pellet boiler provides heating, and RHI payments approaching £6000 per annum.) and beyond that is a meadow.
